Monk & Psych…are you ready?

Posted in Monk, Psych on August 6, 2009 by awsumdave

After a long hot and humid Summer, I’m about ready to start watching TV again.  What else to better start the new premiere season with than Monk and Psych, the world’s favorite detectives?

This friday, the final season of Monk is back and better than ever as several well-known guest stars line up to bid Monk his farewell.  Some of the names you may recognize, such as Jay Mohr.  If you don’t like small spoilers, this may ruin things for you so skip ahead to the next paragraph…but another guest appearance will be held by none other than Monk’s first nurse Sharona! That I cannot wait for.

Psych will also be returing, and thankfully is not in it’s final season.  I have really enjoyed Psych up to this point, regardless of the fact that last season focused a lot on the drama.  Drama can be good as well, so kudos to the Psych writers.  Last season it ended with Jules and Shawn almost getting together, until he turned her down to date the other girl…that had me cringing, but as hard as it is to say, I really think that’s good writing.  Think about it…they get together…and then what? No more romantic tension between the two that we have all grown to love.

Everyone tune into USA Network tomorrow and be sure to pop some popcorn! This is going to be great, peace out!

MONK: Mr. Monk Gets Hypnotized – Recap

Posted in Monk on September 13, 2008 by awsumdave

Its mid-series finale time for USA’s hit shows, like Monk and Psych. First up is Monk in “Mr. Monk Gets Hypnotized.” This episode, like many this season, was done differently. Apart from its normal format, Monk decided to give Monk a break. Of course it wouldn’t last, but it gave us, as a viewer, more laughs along the way.

There were several aspects to how this show did possess its classic format. It had its main case, Randy had his own mini-story arc, and Monk solves the case, however…Monk was not involved in much of the case at all.

When he was investigating a murder, a familiar face came up to greet him, Mr. Harold Crenshaw. Anyone who is a fan of Monk knows that Harold is Monk’s foe, always has been since the beginning of the series when they began fighting in Dr. Kroger’s office. This time however, he was not acting as a foe. He was acting as a friend, which confused Monk. Harold told him it was because of his new therapist. His new therapist was actually a hypnotist, which explained Harold’s behavior, so that’s when Monk decided to get the same treatment. So he did, and reverted to his own 9 year-old self, where he had no fears, and was always happy.

They had a similar episode of Monk a few seasons ago. Monk took medication which actually healed him of his fears, the only side effect was the fact that even though he was better, he was a terrible detective. The same applied here, he was only a child, not a detective. Though he did make coincidental findings here and there.

I liked Randy’s story this episode. This time, he invented a new gum, “Disher Mint” lol. The flavor of his gum was Diet Raspberry that just sounds gross in itself. Of course that actually played out to be a main detail of the storyline. Which was probably the funniest part of the episode, when after the piece of gum was chewed by Leland, spit on the ground, stepped on by a shoe, walked around, touching every platform of ground possible, then Monk chewed it for five hours! Classic!

The show has been exploring different directions to go with the show. I normally don’t like the format to change, but this episode was just too great. Monk acting like a child won me over. Well I guess I have to wait until January. We’ll miss you, Monk, but you’ll be back, and we’ll be here waiting. Peace Out!

MONK: Mr. Monk Falls in Love – Recap

Posted in Monk on August 23, 2008 by awsumdave

Go, Mr. Monk! From all the years watching this show, we’ve really never seen an episode like this one. We finally see Monk happy and not freaking out about every little thing. I enjoyed this episode a lot.

The episode starts off with Randy on a date! Of all people, who would’ve guessed, he found himself a nice lady friend. Randy’s date ends abruptly when the cab they stepped inside had a murder victim inside. What was the murder weapon you ask? A hat pin used to stab him in the neck.

One of the suspects in this murder case was Leila, a foreign girl with a strong accent. All evidence strongly points to her, but Monk isn’t convinced because the first time in years, Monk actually started to like another girl. I’m actually happy for the guy. Poor guy has been pathetic, no offense, for what seems like an eternity, and here he found a girl he was attracted to.

Monk doesn’t let this go, and Captain Stottlemeyer can’t exactly trust Monk’s opinion, due to his infatuation with the suspect. So Monk tells her he can’t see her anymore, due to legal terms, but for some unknown reason (love) he can’t bring himself to leave, and they end up dancing. This was a nice scene. Monk held her hand and waste, not even freaking out, just lost in the moment. That’s when the cops decided to bust in and arrest her.

Apparently, the murder weapon had her family crest on it, and this is when she confessed to murdering the cab driver. It was a clear cover up for someone else in her family, but the real question is, who in their right mind would kill someone with something with your family crest embedded on it, then LEAVE it in the victim?

Monk couldn’t let his pookie go to prison, so using his amazing detective powers, he found out that the true killer was Leila’s very own mother. She killed the cab driver, because he killed her whole family years before. When they made the mistake, the police station let Leila go, and arrested her mother. Unfortunately, this is where she got angry at Monk, and told him to get back to his wife…ouch.

Oh, Mr. Monk, you’ll find happiness someday.

Now I feel sad for the guy. For once in his life, Monk got what he needed, and he was happy. Now, he is back to square one. Our beloved detective, who’s even more screwed up in the head than he was before. Peace out!

MONK: Mr. Monk is Underwater Recap

Posted in Monk on August 17, 2008 by awsumdave

Monk is one of my favorite USA programs. This episode, though, as funny as it was, was a little dull compared to other episodes of Monk. There were some obvious blue screen effects, and bad CGI done in this episode to make it look fake. Though my love for the show overpowered that.

In this episode Monk has to investigate a mysterious suicide that happened inside of a submarine. Now everyone can most definitely guess that since Monk has that fear of enclosed spaces, that he loses his mind. In fact he does, he starts talking to his imaginary friend, Dr. Bell.

Now, all due respect to the late Stanley Kamel, but when he played Dr. Kroger, Monk couldn’t stand any other therapist. This is only my opinion, but I think Monk is bonding way too quickly to his new therapist. I understand you can’t replace a beloved actor, but it almost seems like they are trying to. That is just my observation.

So this suicide happened inside of a locked room, and Monk must figure out how he was murdered. Scoping the victims room, he found a piece of plastic that had the distinct smell of gunpowder on it.

It was pretty obvious before the beginning credits that the captain was “the guy” it just wasn’t so obvious HOW he was the guy. That’s why we have dear old Monk. Well, Monk found a bottle in the captain’s room, and since the captain is the only person who drinks from those bottles, Monk put two and two together. The bottle was taped to the gun to silence it.

All in all, it was again, a weak episode of Monk. Hopefully they bring their A game next episode. What’s interesting is that Ted Levine who plays Leland in the show has never once missed an episode. So it was sad not to see him in this episode, just Randy. So if I am right, the only character who have been in every single episode are Monk and Randy. So catch you all next week, Peace out!

MONK: Mr. Monk Takes a Punch – Recap

“When a famous boxer’s life is threatened, Monk takes the case and finds himself in the middle of a big championship fight.” – Official Synopsis

Some of the most memorable scenes in film history are the training montages in the “Rocky” series. So is it by any surprise that they try to re-create these scenes in this episode of Monk? Not really. I wouldn’t even say it was a recreation either. More like a spoof.

There are two main plots in this episode. The main plot being the case Monk was working on. Monk is called to a boxing ring when it is found out that somebody is trying to kill a famous boxer. The second main plot is the fact that Monk needs to take a physical examination to see if he is fit to work with the police department.

Monk’s preparation scenes for his examination were actually, in my opinion, the best parts of the episode. They had some pretty funny material when it came to that part of the show. Monk had some great one-liners, as always, “you’re giving me laxative?” It then went to Monk doing his entire routine at the boxing ring without even knowing it. It was great.

The actual crime scenes weren’t as great. Maybe it’s just because I’m not a huge fan of boxing. Basically, there was an old man who stole some very expensive paintings, and his thievery was caught on camera for a commercial the boxer was making. Which is the reason why he wanted to kill the boxer. He knew if the boxer died, they would never air the commercial. Sound confusing? It really isn’t, even I figured it out before Monk did, well to be honest, as he did. Peace out!

MONK: Mr. Monk Gets Lotto Fever Recap

Posted in Monk on August 2, 2008 by awsumdave

Watch all MONK episodes HERE

Monk gets lotto fever? More like Natalie Teeger gets lotto fever! After the brutal murder of a famous “lotto-girl” Monk’s assistant, Natalie is asked at the crime scene to come by to call that night’s lotto numbers. Monk, of course, was against the whole thing because of the fact that he is indeed a selfish selfish man.

So that night, Natalie goes for it, and calls out the lotto numbers. I can’t be sure about anywhere else in the world, but everywhere I’ve ever lived, a “lotto-girl” was never popular. The lottery was the lottery, that’s it. However, she got widely recognized as the new face of the lottery, and everyone loved her for some reason.

Since Monk is so selfish, he really starts to notice how much he misses being the one that everyone loves. He misses being a celebrity. Now Natalie obtained the celebrity power, and since he can’t stand it anymore, he forced her to decide between him and the lottery. Well, since Natalie is also selfish, she chose the lottery, because she liked all the attention.

Soon after this, we learn that the antagonist in this episode was none other than the lottery sound engineer. Monk found out later in the episode that he was planning to win big in the lottery, 212 Million dollars to be precise. The only problem was when Natalie took the job at the lottery, she accidentally got him fired.

With the machine rigged, the same numbers would come up over and over again. So to take the suspicion off of himself, the sound engineer planted a winning lottery ticket with Captain Leland Stottlemeyer. Monk did his thing, and knew exactly what went down in about two minutes.

I liked this episode, like always, but I do have a problem with it. We saw a similar episode of Monk a few seasons ago with basically the same plot. It was about the lottery, and a rigged machine. So I have to admit that this is a more weaker episode of Monk, but I did have fun watching it.

Monk & Psych are Back!

Posted in Monk, Psych on July 31, 2008 by awsumdave

That’s right! Monk and Psych returned to air not too long ago. For Monk, this is his 7th year on air, and might I say, he still has it! After six full seasons, the writers of Monk know how to keep a story interesting. Every episode they come up with is a brand new case that is entertaining enough to keep an audience. My one minor problem I have with this is that Monk is still grieving over his dead wife. Not to be cruel or anything, but she died several years ago. I say this is a minor problem, simply because Tony Shalhoub puts on an amazing performance as Adrian Monk, and that alone eludes everything else.

MONK: SEASON 7: EPISODE 1: MR. MONK BUYS A HOUSE

The first episode of season seven was called “Mr. Monk Buys a House.” While it held up with its promised comedic elements, the heart of this episode was actually very sad. It was completely revolved around the death of Monk’s psychiatrist, Dr. Charles Kroger, played by the late Stanley Kamel. The way Monk handled his death, was he bought a new house to get away from his “noisy” neighbor.

Brad Garett, known for his roll as Robert Barone in “Everybody Loves Raymond” guest starred in this episode as “Honest Jake,” a renovator that Monk hired to fix up his house. Though Jake ends up destroying Monk’s house more than anything.

[CAUTION SPOILERS AHEAD; YE BE WARNED]

This is when we find out that “Honest Jake” isn’t so honest after all. His character was actually looking for money that was hidden inside the house Monk bought. So along with dealing with his shrink’s death, Monk ends up having to solve two murder cases as well. It’s a good episode. Watch the full episode HERE

[END OF SPOILERS]

MONK: SEASON 7: EPISODE 2: MR. MONK AND THE GENIUS

The last episode of Monk that just aired last week was called “Mr. Monk and the Genius”

This episode was interesting, but not quite as good as the premier. The entire episode revolves around chess, and corny chess lines. I myself am an avid fan of the game, but I wouldn’t walk around in my daily life and say things like, “…your move,” and “checkmate.” It’s almost as bad as the cheesy lines in “Batman & Robin.”

In this episode, a genius, who is apparently smarter than Einstein, supposedly killed his wife for the money. The only problem is, this guy is a genius, so obviously he can plan out a perfect murder. This fact alone drives Monk mad as he almost plants evidence on the guy, just to get it over with. Come on, Monk! You’re smarter than that! There were just parts of the show where the chess master basically committed to the crime, but since he is so smart, I guess that doesn’t matter.

I have just one thing to say about this. Chess is a good game, but it doesn’t reflect on real life as this episode makes it out. Just because you can think 5 moves ahead of time, doesn’t mean you can do the same thing in real life. I don’t care who you are, or how smart you claim to be. People are unpredictable, they always have been, and they always will be.

PSYCH: SEASON 3: EPISODE 1 – THE GHOST IN YOU

I remember when Psych first aired on USA. I wasn’t sure if I’d like it. A show about a guy pretending he had psychic powers to solve crimes? Well, after I saw a few episodes, I was hooked. This show is genuinely hysterical. I do have to admit, however, that I loved the idea of his photographic memory at first, and thought they could have just made the show about that, and it would have been just as good. Looking back at that thought, I realize that I was wrong, that they made a wise decision doing what they did.

This first episode of Psych was interesting. I did like it, don’t get me wrong, I am just a little confused how I feel about the direction the shows heading in. It seems they are going for a more dramatic approach. The first episode, we see Shawn’s mother comes back into his life, which is a big deal for him. Also Gus has a job, and is forced to quit Psych. I was wondering if this dramatic approach was a one-time deal, but the second episode also had some drama, but I’ll get to that later.

Shawn and Gus are hired to investigate a so-called haunted house. If they don’t do the job, Gus will be fired from his new job. So together they go to the house, and sure enough the house is spooky.

[WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD: YE BE WARNED]

We learn that throughout the entire episode, Shawn was orchestrating all of the strange things happening in the house, to make sure Gus keeps his job. Pretty funny.

[SPOILERS OVER]

Overall, definitely an interesting episode. Still as good as seasons one or two? Too soon to tell. We’ll see. Check out this full episode HERE

PSYCHE: SEASON 3: EPISODE 2 – MURDER?…ANYONE?…ANYONE?…BUELLER?

Who doesn’t love Ferris Bueller? This is what I love about the titles of all these Psyche episodes, they refer to a popular phrase, or movie title. Always fun to notice these allusions. Actually, the reason they named the episode after the movie, is because it’s Shawn and Gus’s high school reunion. He grew up in the 80’s, therefore, Ferris Bueller.

Actually, I think I liked this episode more than the premier, to tell you the truth. I liked where they were going with this episode. Plenty of humorous scenes, that did in fact kept me guessing. At the reunion, Shawn witnesses a murder, that to everyone else, never happened. So it’s up to Shawn and Gus to solve a crime that never happened.

I was talking about drama earlier. This one also had a good amount of drama in it. In this particular episode, Shawn meets an old friend from school that so happened to be a girl he used to like. The show goes way back to Shawn’s past as he describes what he went through back then when it came to her. Romantic, yes, but it’s not the Shawn we are used to. It’s not the Shawn we’ve all grown to love. Also, it re-introduced Shawn’s feelings for Jules. I actually have a pretty big problem with this.

It’s one of those things, where you can just see that it probably will never happen, but you want it to so badly. So if this show were to be cancelled, and they never got together, I’d probably punch a wall out of anger. It’s just one of those things you want to see done.

Definitely an episode to check out. Watch it HERE
