Monk & Psych…are you ready?

Posted in Monk, Psych on August 6, 2009 by awsumdave

After a long hot and humid Summer, I’m about ready to start watching TV again.  What else to better start the new premiere season with than Monk and Psych, the world’s favorite detectives?

This friday, the final season of Monk is back and better than ever as several well-known guest stars line up to bid Monk his farewell.  Some of the names you may recognize, such as Jay Mohr.  If you don’t like small spoilers, this may ruin things for you so skip ahead to the next paragraph…but another guest appearance will be held by none other than Monk’s first nurse Sharona! That I cannot wait for.

Psych will also be returing, and thankfully is not in it’s final season.  I have really enjoyed Psych up to this point, regardless of the fact that last season focused a lot on the drama.  Drama can be good as well, so kudos to the Psych writers.  Last season it ended with Jules and Shawn almost getting together, until he turned her down to date the other girl…that had me cringing, but as hard as it is to say, I really think that’s good writing.  Think about it…they get together…and then what? No more romantic tension between the two that we have all grown to love.

Everyone tune into USA Network tomorrow and be sure to pop some popcorn! This is going to be great, peace out!

PSYCH: Guy Walks Into a Bank – Recap

Posted in Psych on September 13, 2008 by awsumdave

Like Monk, Psych also had it’s summer finale Friday.  Also like Monk, it stepped away from its original format for the episode to go a different direction.   This time, Shawn and Gus get themselves caught up in the middle of a bank robbery.

First, Gust walks into the bank.  Then Alan Ruck, otherwise known as Cameron Frye in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off guest starred as the bank robber, Phil.  Although, it doesn’t take Shawn long to find out that Phil wasn’t actually a bad guy, he was just robbing the bank because he had no choice.  You see his wife was kidnapped, and her captors forced him to rob the bank for them, in order for her to live.

Shawn uses his genius detective skills to find out that the men behind the kidnap were actually inside the bank at the time.  The only problem was, he only identified one of the men. Phil was desperate to save his wife, so he took the man Shawn identified into the other room.  Unfortunetly he was ambushed by the other unknown criminal.

Eventually, Shawn and Gus figure everything out (mostly Shawn).  The bad guys are caught and everybody lives happily ever after.  But not without Psych exploring more of it’s dramatic approach.

Jules dating the older guy was kinda gross, no offense, and Shawn knew that too, and he was obviously jealous.  I just want Shawn and Jules together, to end all this nonsense.

On the side, who noticed the pineapple in the bank?  It was on an accountant’s desk shelf, and it zipped by as Shawn and Phil walked.  Man, finding these pineapples are like finding Waldo.  Anyways, we all have to wait till January till Psych returns.  THE COUNTDOWN STARTS NOW! Peace out.

PSYCH: There Might Be Blood – Recap

Posted in Psych on August 23, 2008 by awsumdave

Like last week’s episode of Monk, this episode of Psych mainly took place out on the ocean. It my only be me, but I am really starting to think that water episodes of TV shows are among the weakest in a series. I could be wrong. One thing is for sure, that even though this episode was weak, it was a heck more interesting than last week’s Monk.

In this episode, Shawn and Gus have to investigate the apparent accidental death of a Safety Inspector who fell off of an Oil Rig. This of course, was after he was hit by a crane. The coast guard ruled it an accident, but the police department was informed by an anonymous tip that something suspicious was happening on that rig. So Chief Vic brought Shawn and Gus on a ship, and they were on their way when the Chief’s sister stopped them.

Apparently law enforcement runs in their family, because her sister was the leader of the coast guard. And this episode, if anything other than the murder, was about sibling rivalry. It’s always fun to see sisters fight.

Of course the coast guard and police station don’t have the genius skills Shawn and Gus have, so it’s without question that Shawn found evidence that it was, in fact, foul play. You see, the Geologist was told to make a fake map, because whoever the killer was, which in the long run was unimportant, was trying to cover up a “boo boo.” The rig was drilling over fault lines.

So Shawn and Gus save the day again. It was a weak episode, but it still is watchable, I probably wouldn’t really care to see it again, but I would if I had to. See you in two weeks, Peace out!

PSYCH: Disco Didn’t Die, It Was Murdered! Recap

Alright, show of hands, who noticed the change in the theme song this week? I actually liked the extension. It had more to show in its intro, so it worked for me.

So this episode, we got to see more interaction between Shawn and his dad as they worked a case together. The case they were working on was Henry’s biggest case when he worked on the force, and due to some complications, the case was opened up again. Not only were they working together, we were able to see some really interesting similarities between father and son. Apparently, Henry can do what Shawn does. I never knew that.

So several years ago, Shawn’s dad busted a guy for putting together some bombs, and because they were set to blow up the police department, Henry was a hero. Now, evidence is pointing to the fact that this guy may be innocent, and that was driving him a little bonkers.

You guys see Gus’s new car that he bought for $450 dollars? It was joked around as an old disco-mobile this episode, but I have a pretty good feeling this will be the new car from now on.

So as it turns out, the man Henry arrested years ago was innocent, and Shawn put away the real evil-doers, which was a stepford-like couple living in a beautiful home. The episode did get a little confusing here and there, but it was pretty hysterical. Also, what happened to all the drama in this season? I was actually getting use to it. Oh well, this is the Psych I love anyways. Peace out!

PSYCH: The Greatest Adventure in the History of Basic Cable Recap

The classic format of Psych changed for this episode. Instead of a classic detective case, where Shawn and Gus are solving a murder of some kind, they are on the hunt for an ancient treasure, with their Uncle Jack, played by Steven Weber.

Uncle Jack, the treasure hunter

So when Shawn’s uncle comes back to town, he asks for Shawn and Gus’s help in finding a treasure. So with his fake psychic abilities and love for money, Shawn agrees to help. Together they all chase after the treasure, while at the same time, other evil men are chasing after it as well. That’s where the show lacked. I think we can all say we have seen this scenario fifty times in movies and television. We’ve seen it enough. We don’t need to see it in an episode of Pysch.

So I don’t need to really tell you what happens, because you can probably guess. The evil men get control and almost get the treasure, but Shawn outsmarts them, and takes the gold for himself. Oh yeah, and his Uncle is a lying pig. I pretty much figured this all out ten minutes in. The storyline does not fit into an episode of Psych. So I’d say that this episode was one of the weaker episodes this year, or even all series.

I was surprised after I watched this episode though. Lately, Psych has been experimenting with a lot of drama, and this episode was a little like an older episode of Psych, in the idea that it was just pure comedy. But take my advice, and just get back to what you’re best at, crime cases. Peace out.

PSYCH: Daredevils! Recap

Who remembers Evil Knievel? I know I do, and this episode was indirectly a reflection off of Evil’s work. I followed Evil Knievel’s career back in the day, and because I did, I was able to pretty much guess where the show was going.

The episode starts off at the fair. I don’t know about you, but I myself recently went to the fair, and I can tell you for a fact that there were no Daredevils riding around on motorcycles. I guess I wasn’t as lucky. At the fair, a famously known daredevil, AKA “Dutch the Clutch” was performing a stunt. In the middle of the stunt, Dutch is hurt, and Shawn tells Gus that this was attempted murder…cue the intro music.

Even his suit was almost a direct copy of Evil’s

Dutch’s son Robbie, err I mean Lewis introduced Shawn and Gus to his father. It’s here that we learn that he really doesn’t think anything can harm him. He proves this by jumping off his balcony drunk as a skunk. We also learn that Dutch has an arch nemesis, a daredevil foe that is getting more popular by the minute. This is when I made the other connection to Evil Knievel. Evil’s son Robbie was also a daredevil who took his fathers place. It’s later proven that yes, I was right.

Although, contrary to their belief, his son was not out to kill him. Dutch was actually dying. This is when Shawn and the rest of the audience realized that Dutch was out to kill himself. Shawn has a heartwarming conversation with Dutch, telling him not to go through with it. He said that he understood that he was doing it for his family, that they needed the money, but what would they rather have, more money, or more time with him. With tears in his eyes, he listened to Shawn.

So, with all that being said, they are really taking this drama approach to a whole new level. Every episode this season has had a little drama, mostly family oriented. This episode it was about preventing suicide! Again, I am not sure I like this whole approach to drama, but I’ll keep an open mind.

On the side, Jules was trying to find the captain a girlfriend, and he thought she liked him. I just thought that was funny. Peace out!

Monk & Psych are Back!

Posted in Monk, Psych on July 31, 2008 by awsumdave

That’s right! Monk and Psych returned to air not too long ago. For Monk, this is his 7th year on air, and might I say, he still has it! After six full seasons, the writers of Monk know how to keep a story interesting. Every episode they come up with is a brand new case that is entertaining enough to keep an audience. My one minor problem I have with this is that Monk is still grieving over his dead wife. Not to be cruel or anything, but she died several years ago. I say this is a minor problem, simply because Tony Shalhoub puts on an amazing performance as Adrian Monk, and that alone eludes everything else.

MONK: SEASON 7: EPISODE 1: MR. MONK BUYS A HOUSE

The first episode of season seven was called “Mr. Monk Buys a House.” While it held up with its promised comedic elements, the heart of this episode was actually very sad. It was completely revolved around the death of Monk’s psychiatrist, Dr. Charles Kroger, played by the late Stanley Kamel. The way Monk handled his death, was he bought a new house to get away from his “noisy” neighbor.

Brad Garett, known for his roll as Robert Barone in “Everybody Loves Raymond” guest starred in this episode as “Honest Jake,” a renovator that Monk hired to fix up his house. Though Jake ends up destroying Monk’s house more than anything.

[CAUTION SPOILERS AHEAD; YE BE WARNED]

This is when we find out that “Honest Jake” isn’t so honest after all. His character was actually looking for money that was hidden inside the house Monk bought. So along with dealing with his shrink’s death, Monk ends up having to solve two murder cases as well. It’s a good episode. Watch the full episode HERE

[END OF SPOILERS]

MONK: SEASON 7: EPISODE 2: MR. MONK AND THE GENIUS

The last episode of Monk that just aired last week was called “Mr. Monk and the Genius”

This episode was interesting, but not quite as good as the premier. The entire episode revolves around chess, and corny chess lines. I myself am an avid fan of the game, but I wouldn’t walk around in my daily life and say things like, “…your move,” and “checkmate.” It’s almost as bad as the cheesy lines in “Batman & Robin.”

In this episode, a genius, who is apparently smarter than Einstein, supposedly killed his wife for the money. The only problem is, this guy is a genius, so obviously he can plan out a perfect murder. This fact alone drives Monk mad as he almost plants evidence on the guy, just to get it over with. Come on, Monk! You’re smarter than that! There were just parts of the show where the chess master basically committed to the crime, but since he is so smart, I guess that doesn’t matter.

I have just one thing to say about this. Chess is a good game, but it doesn’t reflect on real life as this episode makes it out. Just because you can think 5 moves ahead of time, doesn’t mean you can do the same thing in real life. I don’t care who you are, or how smart you claim to be. People are unpredictable, they always have been, and they always will be.

PSYCH: SEASON 3: EPISODE 1 – THE GHOST IN YOU

I remember when Psych first aired on USA. I wasn’t sure if I’d like it. A show about a guy pretending he had psychic powers to solve crimes? Well, after I saw a few episodes, I was hooked. This show is genuinely hysterical. I do have to admit, however, that I loved the idea of his photographic memory at first, and thought they could have just made the show about that, and it would have been just as good. Looking back at that thought, I realize that I was wrong, that they made a wise decision doing what they did.

This first episode of Psych was interesting. I did like it, don’t get me wrong, I am just a little confused how I feel about the direction the shows heading in. It seems they are going for a more dramatic approach. The first episode, we see Shawn’s mother comes back into his life, which is a big deal for him. Also Gus has a job, and is forced to quit Psych. I was wondering if this dramatic approach was a one-time deal, but the second episode also had some drama, but I’ll get to that later.

Shawn and Gus are hired to investigate a so-called haunted house. If they don’t do the job, Gus will be fired from his new job. So together they go to the house, and sure enough the house is spooky.

[WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD: YE BE WARNED]

We learn that throughout the entire episode, Shawn was orchestrating all of the strange things happening in the house, to make sure Gus keeps his job. Pretty funny.

[SPOILERS OVER]

Overall, definitely an interesting episode. Still as good as seasons one or two? Too soon to tell. We’ll see. Check out this full episode HERE

PSYCHE: SEASON 3: EPISODE 2 – MURDER?…ANYONE?…ANYONE?…BUELLER?

Who doesn’t love Ferris Bueller? This is what I love about the titles of all these Psyche episodes, they refer to a popular phrase, or movie title. Always fun to notice these allusions. Actually, the reason they named the episode after the movie, is because it’s Shawn and Gus’s high school reunion. He grew up in the 80’s, therefore, Ferris Bueller.

Actually, I think I liked this episode more than the premier, to tell you the truth. I liked where they were going with this episode. Plenty of humorous scenes, that did in fact kept me guessing. At the reunion, Shawn witnesses a murder, that to everyone else, never happened. So it’s up to Shawn and Gus to solve a crime that never happened.

I was talking about drama earlier. This one also had a good amount of drama in it. In this particular episode, Shawn meets an old friend from school that so happened to be a girl he used to like. The show goes way back to Shawn’s past as he describes what he went through back then when it came to her. Romantic, yes, but it’s not the Shawn we are used to. It’s not the Shawn we’ve all grown to love. Also, it re-introduced Shawn’s feelings for Jules. I actually have a pretty big problem with this.

It’s one of those things, where you can just see that it probably will never happen, but you want it to so badly. So if this show were to be cancelled, and they never got together, I’d probably punch a wall out of anger. It’s just one of those things you want to see done.

Definitely an episode to check out. Watch it HERE
